Soldier from Urbana dies in Alaska traffic crash

Anchorage, Alaska — An Urbana man serving with the U.S. Army at Fort Wainwright died in a crash on the Parks Highway Friday afternoon, the Army announced in a press release.

Cameron Logwood, 21, was traveling to Anchorage for an intramural basketball tournament with others in an SUV when the crash occurred about 3:30 p.m.  Heavy snow was blowing and visibility was reduced, Alaska State troopers said. The roadway was reportedly icy.

A northbound one-ton pickup was rounding a curve when it was struck by a compact sport utility vehicle driven by Logwood, troopers said. The pickup driver took evasive action but could not avoid the collision.

Two passengers in Logwood’s SUV were injured in the crash. The pickup driver and a passenger in his truck were not injured.

Logwood was an aircraft fuel handler for the 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment.
