Byrd was transported to Mercy/Urbana Hospital where he later died Sunday.

“We are saddened at this loss because Troy was a part of our Y family,” Waldsmith said. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family.”

The cause of Byrd’s death has not been ruled and the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy and toxicology report, Champaign County Coroner Josh Richards told News Center 7’s Jenna Lawson.

Several area teams are wearing Byrd’s number 8 to honor him, who died a day before his 12th birthday.
