Firefighters were called out to the townhouse on East Home Road around 1 p.m. on reports of a natural gas leak.

Moments after crews arrived on the scene an explosion happened, Springfield Fire Chief Brian Miller told News Center 7 on scene Saturday.

“They were faced with two of the victims coming out of the structure and were told that there was a baby in the upstairs apartment,” Leciejewski said.

From there, firefighters went up to the second story and rescued the child.

Ducatel, another woman and the 11-month-old girl were flown to area hospitals. One woman is the child’s mother and the two adults were sisters.

Leciejewski told News Center 7 that the mother injured remains in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital while the child is being treated at Shriners Children’s Ohio inside Dayton Children’s Hospital.

A resident nearby where the explosion happened told our crew that she “heard a loud boom and watched to building shoot out from the front.”

Another resident, Nidey Laborde, said he was forced to evacuate the chaotic scene.

“There was just a man speed-walking, just yelling, telling me to make sure everyone gets out,” Laborde said.
