After prosecutors and defense attorneys made their final pitches to the jury during closing arguments on Tuesday, the jury was handed the case for deliberation at 12:01 p.m. They reached their verdict after deliberating for just over an hour and a half.
The jury found him guilty of all counts.
Humphrey had been accused of attacking a woman along a bike bath in Springfield in May.
During opening statements on Monday, prosecutors revealed he approached her on a walk and asked her on a date.
“To which she replied, ‘I’m married. No, thank you.’ The male then asked, ‘Can I at least pay you?’ And begins following her,” Slagle said.
Prosecutors said that man was Humphreys who then ran at the woman, knocked her to the ground, and attacked her, but that woman fought him off and called 911.
Humpreys’ DNA was found under the woman’s fingernails and she also picked him out of a lineup.
Humphreys will be sentenced on Jan. 13 and will remain held without bond until then.
As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, a judge will decide whether the sexual motivation and sexually violent predator specifications apply at sentencing. If the judge finds they do apply, Humphreys could face a long prison sentence, up to life in prison in this case.
