Tree topples, damages headstones at New Greencastle Cemetery in Dayton

DAYTON — A large tree fell and toppled over some headstones at the New Greencastle Cemetery on Nicholas Road in Dayton.

Over the years, there have been maintenance concerns at both the new and old Greencastle sites.

Out at the cemetery on Monday, there were limbs scattered throughout the cemetery in addition to the felled tree that landed on gravestones.

A number listed for the cemetery superintendent was not valid.

Kevin Fry, who has relatives buried in the Old Greencastle Cemetery, said he is passionate about cleaning up not only his family’s plot there, but hopes someone can step up and take care of the New Greencastle Cemetery.

“It’s sad, it’s really sad that it shouldn’t be sitting there at all. Lots of these trees are dead and should have been cut down years ago but no one is here to maintain them. So it’s very frustrating,” he said.

Last summer, a group of residents got together and helped clean up the old cemetery. They were able to pick up trash, mow the grass and clear weeds and brush in the cemetery.
