Hours-long standoff in Springfield ends; One taken into custody

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield police say a man is behind bars at the Clark County Jail following a lengthy standoff.

The standoff started at a home on South Lowry Avenue early Monday morning and lasted nearly 15 hours.

A Springfield police Lieutenant told News Center 7 it started as a domestic incident and turned into a standoff after police responded.

Police say it took them all day to negotiate with the man, whose identity has not been released yet.

Around 5:45 p.m., SWAT members and police were able to convince the man decided to come out and he surrendered without incident.

The man had a towel over his face to hide his identity as police hauled him off to jail after hours of negotiation.

A Springfield police sergeant told News Center 7 a man, woman and child were involved in the standoff, but would not specify how they knew each other.

Police say the woman was able to escape, but the man held the child hostage for several more hours, eventually letting him go unharmed.

When the man was the only one left in the house, police say he refused to come out for a few more hours, creating commotion in what some neighbors say is a quiet area.

“It’s peaceful, but like all neighborhoods, you have your bad apples,” one neighbor told News Center 7.

Springfield police say no one was hurt in the standoff.

We are working to learn what kind of charges the man could possibly be facing.
