A vehicle struck the Key Bank on South Fountain Avenue on Tuesday and three people were taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
The crash was reported around 10:20 a.m. at the bank, 1 S. Fountain Ave.
A maroon SUV was traveling westbound on Main Street when a blue Chevrolet traveling south on Fountain Avenue ran the red light and hit the SUV, according to the Springfield Police Division.
The vehicle then travelled into the bank building, knocking out several of the large glass windows.
It’s not the first time a car has crashed into the Key Bank, Branch Manager Joel Kain said. He was sitting in the office when the car struck the building. Kain wasn’t injured in the accident, but said the glass shattered and hit another piece of glass behind him “like it was pinball.”
“I could see the corner of the car coming into the building,” Kain said. “I was leaning back and I turned to shield myself. The boards came out and grazed me.”
Kain and another employee from the 4 W. Main St. building came to the aid of the couple in the SUV and the driver of the other vehicle before paramedics arrived, he said.
“We just made sure they were OK,” Kain said.
He’s unsure how soon the bank will be able to replace the glass, he said.
