MIAMI VALLEY — It is the first official day of summer and that means summer travel is in full swing.
>>AAA: Summer travel expected to be busiest in years
It has been a challenging start for the airline industry his year and with increased demand this summer, air travel disruptions are likely to become more frequent.
News Center 7 Consumer Report Xavier Hershovitz says it is important to know your rights if you are flying this summer.
In certain circumstances, if your flight is canceled or delayed for a significant amount of time, you may be entitled to compensation.
Hershovitz says you want to check your airline’s policies.
You can also request a re-booking.
If your flight is canceled, some airlines can rebook your flight at no additional charge or give you a refund for the unused portion of your ticket.
“They would prefer you didn’t take that refund,” said Scott Keyes, Founder & Chief Flight Expert at Going.com. “So, instead what they are willing to do is to switch you to any other flight.”
>>Expect big crowds for the summer travel season -- and big prices, too
Hershovitz reports travel experts also recommend you document and communicate.
If you experience a flight disruption, make sure to keep all relevant documents. This includes boarding passes, tickets, and receipts for any expenses incurred.
>>WHIO Pump Patrol: Find Cheap Gas Prices
If you are traveling on the road this summer, gas prices across the country are averaging $3.58 per gallon and $3.47 per gallon in Ohio. The average cost per gallon in the Dayton area is $3.39 a gallon.
Where will gas prices go after this if you are planning to travel in the next few weeks? Gas analysts say we will see these prices for at least the next few weeks, and it could last longer.
Hershovitz says so many outside factors go into gas prices. The big thing analysts are looking for is if any hurricanes impact gas production and that could send gas prices up in the next few weeks.
Hershovitz saw gas prices as low as $3.29 in Huber Heights and $3.39 in Englewood.
