Springfield police say no arrest made in shots-fired incident that followed crash

Witnesses said a man driving a van deliberately crashed into a man on an ATV and than chased him up the street, shooting at him with a gun on Edwards Avenue in Springfield.

UPDATE @ 8:45 p.m.: Police confirm that shots were fired after a collision on Edwards Avenue in Springfield involving a van and an ATV, but the police division is contradicting witness reports that someone was taken into custody.

Lt. Matthew Buynak said no arrest has been made and that the investigation into the Monday afternoon incident is ongoing.

He also confirmed that the driver of the van did get out his vehicle and fired a weapon at the ATV operator, who was not hit by gunfire but did suffer an injury related to the crash. 

Police have confiscated both vehicles, the lieutenant said, and the section of Edwards Avenue that was closed because of the incident is being reopened.

UPDATE @ 5:48 p.m.: 

The driver in a van collision with an ATV, who witnesses said got out of the vehicle and fired a rifle at the ATV rider while chasing him down Edwards Avenue in Springfield, is in custody, we’re hearing. The incident caused police to shut down a section of the street.

We’re working to verify witness accounts that a man in a van deliberately caused the ATV to crash. Witnesses tell us he got out of the van and began chasing the ATV rider, firing at the ATV rider several times.

The ATV rider was not hit by gunfire, but did suffer a leg injury in the collision. Witnesses said they saw him sitting in the street. He has been taken to a hospital.

Witnesses said the rifleman ran but police found him hiding in a house about two blocks from the scene. 

We’re still working to verify the witness accounts with police, who have not made any comment about their investigation.


Police are investigating a shots-fired incident on Edwards Avenue in Springfield that followed a collision involving a van and an ATV. 

Springfield police have not made any comments yet as their investigation is just beginning. 

Neighborhood residents tell us a van and ATV collided in the 1600 block of Edwards and both vehicles came to rest on their sides. 

The incident was reported just after 4 p.m. 

Residents also tell us people in the van got out and began firing at the person who was on the ATV as they ran up Edwards Avenue. 

There are no reports that anyone has been hit by the gunfire, but police have marked several shell casings.
