Springfield High Class of 2020 unveils one-of-a-kind class gift ahead of new school year

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield High School Class of 2020 continues to make their mark on history – this time with a new take on the traditional ‘class gift.’

The Class, with the help of their advisor, Mrs. Niki Sage, commissioned to have Yellow Springs artist Pierre Nagley paint a huge ‘Willie the Wildcat’ mural on one of the school’s most highly trafficked hallways.

The planning for the mural was in place before the COVID-19 outbreak, but the painting was only finished within the last week -- just in time for Springfield’s first day of classes at the end of August.

Many classes in the past have given benches or trees as their class gifts but as this past year as shown us -- 2020 was anything but traditional.

“We wanted something everyone would see all the time,” said Springfield High School Class of 2020 President Aseelah Ashraf. “A lot of times a class gift is something that’s just announced and people forget about it the next year. I think this will kind of remind the school of our class and our contribution.”

Ashraf said she hopes that classes for years to come will see the mural and remember the legacy her class left behind as they overcame challenges brought on by the pandemic.

“You can really see Willie the wildcat jumping out of the wall,” she said. “He’s kind of showing strength, and I think that encapsulates our class as a whole”

I grew up in Springfield and I'm a big fan of all things Springfield, including Schuler's & the Clark County Fair. A career in journalism never really was a serious thought until the end of high school. You just have epiphanies sometimes, and that's the only way I can explain why I got into this line of work – but I'm happier for it!
