Woman dead, man hospitalized after shooting in Springfield Sunday morning

SPRINGFIELD — A woman is dead and a man is hurt after a shooting in Springfield early Sunday morning in the 300 block of West Liberty Street just after 2 a.m.

News Center 7′s Brandon Lewis spoke with neighbors in the area Sunday and they told him what they heard and saw early Sunday morning.

One neighbor said she heard at least two rounds of gunfire. Another person said he came home from a party and found several police cars on the block.

Another neighbor told Lewis they remember seeing all the flashing lights from police cruisers.

Springfield Police tell News Center 7 two people were shot early Sunday morning.

A 54-year-old woman died and medics took a 29-year-old man to the hospital for a gunshot wound in his back.

Police believe the two victims are related but their names have not yet been released.

Lewis reports police are trying to figure out if the shooting happened inside or outside of a home on West Liberty Street, what the condition of the man in the hospital is, details about any suspects and if any arrests have been made.

News Center 7 is working to get those questions answered.

Springfield Police continue to investigate the shooting.
