The crash was discovered around 9:15 a.m. on state Route 38 near King Road, which is a few miles west of the Richmond city limits.

Justin Schmichel, 21, of Greenwood, Indiana was identified as the man killed in the crash, Wayne County Sheriff Randy Retter said in a media release Monday morning.

A preliminary investigation found the car Schmichel was driving went off the side of the road, crashed into a guardrail, ramped over a small river and fence, before the car became wedged between two trees, Retter said.

Schmichel was the only occupant and he was thrown from the car during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Based on the estimated time of death determined by the Wayne County Coroner the crash is believed to have happened around 2 a.m., about seven hours before it was discovered, Retter said.

Potential factors in the crash were not released and the incident remains under investigation.

Additional details were not released.
