Vandalia firefighters were dispatched around 3:15 p.m. to the 8800 block of Dog Leg Road on initial reports of a mulch fire, Vandalia dispatchers told News Center 7.

The report of smoke from a mulch pile quickly escalated into a much larger fire as a result of high winds, the City of Vandalia Division of Fire posted on its Facebook page.

They said the mulch fire is under control and are working to “extinguish a large debris pile that was staged on site waiting to become processed mulch.”

Multiple tankers from several agencies provided mutual aid.

This included Butler Township, Brookville, Englewood, Phillipsburg, and several fire agencies from both Clark and Miami Counties

News Center 7′s Taylor Robertson says you can see the smoke flowing from at least a mile away as she was making her way to the scene.

Images show smoke in the area as firefighters continue to put out the fire.

Firefighters are using a fire hydrant as a water fill site on National Road and Cargo Road, the City of Vandalia said.

They are asking drivers to use caution in this area.
