Richmond Officer Seara Burton passes away five weeks after being shot during traffic stop

RICHMOND — Richmond Police K9 Officer Seara Burton, who shot was in the line of duty, has passed away, according to Richmond Police Chief Michael Britt.

The police department announced late Sunday night that Officer Seara Burton passed away surrounded by her family at Reid Health at 9:59 p.m. She succumbed to the injury she received on August 10.

Final arrangements are pending, according to Richmond Police Chief Michael Britt.

The Richmond Police Department thanked the Richmond community for their support:

Officer Seara Burton was shot on August 10 during a traffic stop.

Other officers on the scene returned fire, and the suspect fled on foot, according to police. After a brief foot chase, the suspect was apprehended and treated for gunshot wounds by the officers. He was later taken to Miami Valley Hospital and remained there until he was discharged last week. He was then booked in the Montgomery County Jail.

Burton was critically injured in the shooting. After spending three weeks at Miami Valley Hospital, Burton’s injuries were described as “unrecoverable” and she was taken off life support on September 1. She was transported to a hospice facility in Richmond on September 3.

Early Monday morning, Dayton Police lined up on West Third Street at the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, where Richmond K9 Officer Seara Burton’s body was taken shortly after her passing.
