DAYTON — If you like to gamble and a sports fan, there will soon be another way for you to enjoy both at an establishment here in Ohio.

The state of Ohio is now accepting applications from over 1,000 restaurants and bars to be allowed to place sports bets which is huge for gamblers who have to travel out of state to do it.

News Center 7′s Dontre Drexelius reports that sports betting is technically legal here in Ohio but no sports books have been launched yet. Applications are flying in from many bars and restaurants because they have to submit an application to be approved to have special kiosks or some way of placing a sports bet inside their business.

Which means sports betting could be happening as soon as January 2023.

Playbook Ohio estimates that once everything is in place, sports betting could bring around $50 million in annual taxes. Football and basketball would make up a majority of that money at almost 70%.

“The potential for us to get that and other bars and restaurants and carry outs to get that is huge,” said Vinny Nyhan, General Manager and Vice President of Vinny’s Bar and Grille and Carry out.

He thinks it will open up another avenue for people so they don’t have to go to casinos to gamble only.

“They can one stop shop if you will play a little keno, put a little, you know, $200 for the Bengals to win the Super Bowl,” Nyhan told Drexelius. “Hopefully they’ll be able to parlay that you know and do all those kinds of things form horse racing to everything.”

Governor DeWine signed House Bill 29 last December to make this potentially possible.
