Man killed by falling boulder while working in trench at Trotwood site identified

TROTWOOD — A construction worker died from his injuries after a boulder fell into the trench he was working in at a Trotwood worksite Tuesday, according to dispatch records.

Martin Torres Lopez, 43, of West Chester, died from his injuries, according to Montgomery County Coroner Kent Harshbarger.

Lopez was an employee of Kelchner Inc., which was the company Montgomery County hired to do work as part of the Wolf Creek Relief Sewer Replacement project, Montgomery County Environmental Services spokeswoman Megan O’Leary said.

“We extended our deepest condolences to the family of the Kelchner, Inc. employee," O’Leary said.

The incident was reported as a man suffering from traumatic injuries in the area of Free Pike and state Route 49 around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Dispatch records indicate Lopez was working in a 25 foot trench when a boulder fell and crushed him. A CareFlight medical helicopter was requested to the scene, however the victim died from his injuries.
