Coronavirus Pandemic: 18 cases lead to shut down of Dayton child care center

DAYTON — UPDATE @ 11:45 p.m.: The Victorum Learning Center in Dayton is shut down at least two weeks following the report of 18 confirmed coronavirus cases at the facility.

Loren Nelson, director of operations, told News Center 7′s Monica Castro on Tuesday night that the center has 12 students and six faculty who tested positive.

Nelson said the first cases were reported in early June to the ODJFS and Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County.

The center received a flurry of positive results on June 19. That led to someone filing a complaint, Nelson said. The complaint led to an inspection by ODJFS, which found the center was in violation as far as reporting the first cases of COVID-19 in a timely fashion.

EARLIER REPORT

Eighteen confirmed coronavirus cases have been reported at Victorum Learning Center in Dayton, said Dan Suffoletto with Dayton & Montgomery County Public Health.

The State Department of Jobs and Family Services received a report June 19 that the Victorum Learning Center was not properly reporting positive cases of COVID-19.

The Victorum Learning Center is located in one of the communities that Gov. DeWine designated as a coronavirus hotspot based on the zip code, 45424.

According to state law, the facility is required to notify the Ohio Department of Family Jobs and Services and local health departments of positive coronavirus test results for employees and children.

An inspection of the child care center found that the complaint was valid and there was a child, administrator, employee, or staff member who tested positive for the coronavirus and the program failed to notify the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services by the next business day in the Ohio Child Licensing and Quality System (OCLQS) as a serious incident.

The center also failed to notify family members about the positive cases, the inspection found.
