Pregnant dog gives birth to puppy after being rescued from house fire in Harrison Township

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — A pregnant dog gave birth to a puppy after being rescued from a house fire in Harrison Township.

Crews were called to respond to the 2600 block of Maplegrove Avenue on reports of a structure fire shortly before 3 p.m., according to Harrison Township Fire Chief Mark Lynch.

According to Lynch, upon arrival, crews found a small living room fire. Neighbors told firefighters on scene that the occupants of the house weren’t home, but there were dogs still inside.

As soon as the first engine crew arrived on scene, they began the initial search and knockdown of the fire and started to pull dogs out of the home, Lynch said.

Lynch says two dogs were rescued and survived, but two other dogs were deceased.

One of the two dogs that survived was pregnant and gave birth to a puppy on the sidewalk near the house, according to Lynch.

“We were able to pull the sack off of the puppy’s face and the mother cleaned the puppy up from there,” Lynch said.

Crews later found a cage with another puppy that had been born earlier in the day.

Lynch says both puppies, the mother and the other dog that survived are doing well and were taken to a local vet.

The fire is still under investigation at this time.
