Police pursuit ends on Ohio 4 after woman reports hostage situation; 1 in custody

DAYTON — A 39-year-old man is in custody after allegedly leading police on a pursuit while officers investigated a possible hostage situation on Wednesday, according to Dayton police.

Officers were dispatched to the area of Deeds Avenue and Ray Street in Dayton after a woman texted 911 reporting she was being held against her will in a car by her ex-boyfriend, investigators told this news outlet.

While officers were investigating the report, the car driven by a man, who police called the suspect, and the victim took off from the scene, police said.

Due to the nature of the investigation, Dayton police officers were permitted to pursue the car and chased it until the driver crashed into a semitrailer on Ohio 4 south of Harshman Road, police said.

The driver was captured after a short foot pursuit into a wooded area.

At least two medics were requested to the scene around 9:15 a.m., per initial reports.

Police did not release the identity of the man they took into custody.

The victim was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. Officers also transported the suspected driver to the hospital after he claimed he ingested fentanyl during the chase, police said.

Police initially blocked the left lane of southbound Ohio 4 but the lane reopened before 10:30 a.m.
