Dayton police not sure whether male, 18, was shot in head or injured in crash

UPDATE @ 11:23 p.m.: Police did find the victim in the shooting suffering from a wound to the back of his head, but it's not clear whether he was grazed by gunfire or was injured in a vehicle crash in the 3000 block of Edison Street, Dayton Sgt. Thomas Schloss said.

Police were dispatched just before 9:30 p.m. on a report that a vehicle hit a "power light pole" on Edison Street, he said, but found the victim's vehicle had hit a parked vehicle.

Officers did find "A couple of (shell) casings," the sergeant said, and witnesses did report hearing gunfire.

Dayton fire personnel tell us the victim was found in front yard in the 500 block of North Decker Avenue, around the corner from the crash.

Residents who called 9-1-1 reported seeing the victim and hearing gunfire in the neighborhood.

“A little guy came to my door and said he had been shot, then he took off running,” one of the callers told a Montgomery County emergency operator/dispatcher. The caller, who said he lived in the 500 block of North Decker Avenue, said the male ran toward Edison.

“He scared me when he came to my door,” the caller said. “Our lights are out over here....”

Another caller told an emergency operator/dispatcher she heard 10 to 15 “semiautomatic gunshots” in the area of Edison and North Decker, then an explosion that plunged her home into darkness.

UPDATE @ 10:06 p.m.:

An 18-year-old male was suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, but it appears to have been a grazing wound, a Dayton fire official said. He was talking and conscious on the way to the hospital.

We're working to confirm whether a vehicle crash in the 3000 Edison Street is connected to the shooting on Decker Avenue, where the victim was found in a front yard.

North Decker, from Melbourne Avenue to Preston Street, and Edison, from North Gettysburg to North Decker avenues, are shut down to traffic until further notice.

A power outage is being reported in the neighborhood because of the crash on Edison. A Dayton Power & Light crew is on scene.

We're working to get a comment from police about whether the shooting and the crash are connected.

INITIAL REPORT

Police are investigating a shooting in Dayton that has left at least one person wounded.

A medic has been called to the 500 block of North Decker Avenue in response to the shooting, which was reported about 9:30 p.m.

We’re hearing the victim is believed to be in stable condition and is being taken to Miami Valley Hospital.

Dayton police were dispatched on reports of shots heard in the area.

Officers also are working to determine whether a vehicle crash reported nearby, in the 3000 block of Edison Street, is connected to the shooting. The crash was reported about the same time as the shooting.
