Man ejected from SUV in fatal crash in Springfield, police said

UPDATE @ 10:45 p.m.:

A 29-year-old man was killed in a crash on South Center Boulevard after he apparently lost control of the black SUV he was driving at high speed, Springfield police traffic investigators said.

The driver, whose name has not been released, was headed south on Center Boulevard at speeds witnesses told police appeared to reach at least 65 mph when he apparently lost control.

The investigation reveals he over-corrected, hit a line of trees and was ejected. The posted speed limit for the street is 35 mph, police said.

He suffered heavy cuts to his head and neck. He is believed to have died at Springfield Regional Medical Center.

Members of the police traffic investigators team remain on scene at 10:45 p.m.

FIRST REPORT

A driver was killed tonight in a single-vehicle crash in Springfield.

The crash was reported around 7:15 p.m. in the 1600 block of South Center Boulevard, according to police. A medical helicopter was called for the man, but it was not clear where he died.

The man, whose name was not released, was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash, police said.
