Playgrounds in Washington Township get safety upgrade thanks to Montgomery County grant

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP — Two playgrounds in Washington Township are getting safety upgrade, according to a Township spokesperson.

The RecPlex Countryside Park is getting a county grant of at least $58,000 from the Montgomery County Solid Waste District Recycle Right Campaign.

The grant will help provide revenue needed to install solid rubber surfaces made of recycled material, a spokesperson said in a news release.

The cushioned surfaces are highly elastic to prevent injuries, required less maintenance, extremely durable and long lasting, and meet safety standards, the Township said.

It will also allow wheelchairs to maneuver easily across the surface.

“Safety and patron accessibility are top considerations at RecPlex,” said Mark Metzger, Recreation Director. “The rubber mulch originally installed over 10 years ago was no longer of the depth and thickness to cushion falls, and persons using wheelchairs could not access the playgrounds.”

The grant from the county allows the Township to correct those safety issues, Metzger said.
