“At the end of the evening, our ultimate goal is just to educate motorists to do the right thing and make other arrangements if they are going to consume alcohol,” Lt. Joseph Gebhart of the OSP Piqua Post said. “There is no place for impaired driving on our roadways and the public supports the efforts of these men and women out here tonight making their community safer.”

UPDATE July 28 @ 12:20 a.m.:

The OVI checkpoint on St. Rt. 571 in Tipp City has ended. We will update this report once the checkpoint results are released.

FIRST REPORT July 27 @ 7:58 p.m.:

An OVI checkpoint is continuing until 10 p.m. on State Route 571 in Tipp City.

The checkpoint is being conducted in conjunction with nearby saturation patrols to combat alcohol-related injury and fatal crashes, and is a partnership involving the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Tipp City police, and the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.

“Each year, countless lives are lost on our area roadways due to people making the poor choice of driving after they have been drinking,” said Lt. Joseph Gebhart, Piqua Post commander.

“State troopers make on average 25,000 OVI arrests each year in an attempt to combat these dangerous drivers. OVI checkpoints are designed to not only deter impaired driving, but to proactively remove these dangerous drivers from our roadways,” he said in a prepared statement.

If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink.

We’ll work to update this report once the checkpoint ends, so check back.
