Ohio BMV warns of text scam targeting drivers

A text message sent to some Ohioans over the weekend claiming to be the Ohio BMV is a scam, the bureau of motor vehicles said Monday.

The scam told people that received it that action was required surrounding the REAL ID program.

“Our REAL ID requirements will be effective January 1st and is mandatory for all domestic travel,” the text message, which was sent from an 855 area code, read.

“The BMV will not text you for your personal information,” a spokesperson said. “If you receive a text message like this regarding REAL ID, do not respond.”

The text message also included a link, which people should not click.
