New Popeye’s restaurant planned at former Applebee’s in Sugarcreek Twp.

SUGARCREEK TWP., Greene County — The former Applebee’s location in front of the Walmart on Wilmington Pike in Sugarcreek Twp. is expected to be turned into a Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen, according to township records.

The restaurant building has sat vacant since June 2018, when Applebee’s abruptly closed.

According to township officials, the Applebee’s building would be demolished and the new Popeye’s would be built on the property.

Popeye’s already has several area restaurants, including a location about five miles away on Wilmington Pike near Meijer in Kettering.

It’s unclear when construction would begin on the new location or when it would open, however a pending sign has been up outside the restaurant for several weeks.

The township’s board of zoning appeals approved several variances for the new Popeye’s location last week.
