WASHINGTON TWP. — Fire crews worked this morning to put out an apartment fire in Centerville.
The fire was reported near the 200 block of S. Main Street at 8:46 a.m., according to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center. Our crew on scene reported the fire being at Chevy Chase Park Apartments.
In a 911 call obtained through a public records request, a caller told dispatchers a woman had to jump out a window to escape the fire.
“I need an ambulance too. The lady had to jump out the window,” the caller said.
Centerville Police told our crew on scene that two women and a dog had to jump out of a window to escape.
Centerville police said the dog did cause a small problem for rescuers. It aggressively barked and growled, not letting anyone near the injured women.
“The dog was upset, can out the second story window and was protecting his family,” John Davis, Centerville Police public information officer, said.
Davis was forced to put on a firefighter’s coat and gloves to approach the dog and throw a blanket over it.
Two residents were transported to area hospitals from the scene, according to a release.
A fire marshal was heading to the scene, dispatchers confirmed.
The fire is under investigation and a estimate of damage has not been determined.
We’ll update this story as we learn.
