Montgomery County Environmental Services organizes Styrofoam recycling event

CENTERVILLE — Montgomery County Environmental Services is coordinating with the Centerville-Washington Park District and the City of Centerville to organize a Styrofoam recycling event Saturday Jan. 2 from 10a.m to 4p.m at Activity Center Park in Centerville.

According to reports from the Society of Environmental Journalists, Styrofoam can take up 30 percent of the space in some landfills, so people are being urged to bring in their Styrofoam for recycling.

For anyone who wants to bring in their Styrofoam, volunteers will be unloading vehicles so those dropping off do not have to get out of their vehicle.

“This is the first time Montgomery County has held an event for recycling Styrofoam. The timing is perfect to gauge interest, and we hope families will hold onto the packing material they may have left over after the holidays,” said John Woodman, Montgomery County Environmental Services Program Specialist.

The first 50 participants will receive a coupon for a free Bill’s Donuts, and the first 200 participants will receive a bag of environmental goodies.

After the Styrofoam is collected and transported to ECO Development in Mason, the material will be recycled into products such as surfboards, picture frames, and coat hangers.
