5 million pounds of beef recalled due to salmonella outbreak

A recall expanded to include another five million pounds of beef — and many of the products are sold at Kroger.

The recall that was first announced in October also includes raw beef products from Private Selection and Laura’s Lean Beef, according to a USDA announcement.

All the products came from Arizona-based brand JBS Tolleson.

“It was announced today that they expanded the recall, which included another five million pounds, so we’re looking at about 12 million pounds-plus of recalled beef products,” said Rick Schairbaum of Greene County Public Health.

The beef may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria.

Amy Schmitt, a nurse with Greene County Public Health, said it’s unusual.

“We usually see maybe an E. coli in beef, so this is a little bit different,” she said.

Nine people in Ohio have gotten sick, with a total 246 across the country, according to the most recent CDC figures from Nov. 15.

How do you know if you have salmonella?

“Fever, diarrhea and of course abdominal cramping,” said Schmitt. “Most people will recover in two to five days.”

If you have any recalled beef products they would most likely be in your freezer.

Look for “Est. 267” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The beef would also have been packaged between July 26 and Sept. 7.

Make sure to throw the product away or return it at the store.
