A 16-year-old male was taken into custody on suspicion of tampering with evidence after 19-year-old Calob Brooks died Wednesday morning of a gunshot wound, Miamisburg police said.
Police and medics responded shortly after 11 a.m. to a home in the 300 block of North Riverview Avenue, and found Brooks, a Miamisburg High School graduate, deceased on the front lawn.
“There’s a kid laying on the ground and it looks like he’s bleeding,” a woman told a 9-1-1 dispatcher. “They were screaming to call 911.”
A man took the phone from the woman who called 9-1-1 and told the dispatcher his son shot the other person on accident.
A neighbor said a teen came to their door asking for them to call 9-1-1. Shortly before the teen arrived, the neighbor reported hearing a bang.
“A kid done run up and told my grandson to call 9-1-1” said Larry Bentley. “He took off and ran back down there.”
Miamisburg Police Chief John Sedlak said it is certainly a possibility the shooting was an accident, but they still don’t know for certain.
Police have recovered a weapon and they are working to find out if it is the one used in the shooting.
“At this point we don’t know who [the weapon] belongs to,” Chief Sedlak said. “We believe it was” the weapon used in the shooting. “We don’t know it was,” he said.
Two residents from the address were interviewed, and a search warrant was conducted, after which the 16-year-old, who is not being named, was taken into custody.
Additional charges are pending further investigation, according to a Miamisburg police release.
