Miami Co. Sheriff’s Office warning residents about phone scam involving gift cards

The Miami County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving gift cards.

The sheriff’s office said it’s getting calls about scammers trying to get people to buy gift cards and then giving the cards’ numbers to the scammer.

In the scam, the person calling will claim someone missed jury duty or has an active arrest warrant and needs to make payments immediately.

“The scammers may be hostile and threaten arrest if payment is not made. Simply hang up and if calls persist, please alert local law enforcement,” the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said law enforcement will never solicit for money, nor will any other governmental agencies.
