I-TEAM: Meijer reports more ‘payment processing issues;’ Customers report duplicate charges

For the second time in as many months, Meijer customers reported transaction issues that resulted in multiple charges, similar to issues that happened in May.

In a post on social media on June 10, Meijer writes that they were affected by “Chase Bank payment process issues.”

The statement read:

“Chase Bank continues to have stability issues with the payment processing system it uses to service many retailers. Unfortunately, Meijer is one of those affected retailers and we are frustrated by the poor customer experience these issues have created for our customers. Chase assures us they are working to correct the issues, and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this has caused. We are still accepting credit and cash.”

Customers on social media reported multiple charges to their accounts with two users saying they have been charged over 10 times.

The next day, Meijer said on their social media accounts the grocery retailer is continuing to work with Chase Bank to resolve the issues with their payment processing system.

“There were additional issues with the Chase Bank credit processing systems last week which affected numerous retailers, including Meijer. Chase has informed us that they have processed the credits for those affected last week and those credits are currently working through customers banking institutions,” the Meijer spokesperson said in a statement issued Monday.

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused our customers and we are hopeful that any customers still affected will receive their credits by the middle of this week.”

A Chase Bank spokesperson also issued a statement Monday, apologizing for the “inconvenience” that the issues caused Meijer and their customers.

“All card processing has been restored. Our teams are working to address any duplicate transactions,” the spokesperson told News Center 7.

In May, I-Team’s John Bedell reported that Meijer customers in the Miami Valley and in other parts of the country reported issues in the checkout lines including double and multiple charges on credit and debit cards.

In this case, Meijer also cited the issues on the company’s transaction processing partner Chase Bank.

We are working to learn how many people have been affected by this issue and what steps are being taken to resolve it.

We will update this story as we learn more.
