Longtime Shelby County deputy loses battle with cancer

SIDNEY — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office lost one of its own Thursday following a brief battle with cancer.

Robert Clay Hoelscher was a corrections officer for more than 23 years, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page.

“During that time he became well respected by the staff, and his compassion, and soft demeanor was a vital trait he showed to all he interacted with.”

According to the social media post, Hoelscher was diagnosed with lung cancer a week ago. He is survived by his wife, Becky, and their two daughters.
