2 taken into custody after SWAT standoff in Dayton

DAYTON — A police and SWAT standoff in Dayton has ended with two people in custody Wednesday afternoon.

Around 11:30 a.m. crews were called to a home in the 1000 block of West Norman Avenue to reports of shots fired, according to Major Chris Malson with Dayton Police Department.

A woman told police a man had shot at her during an argument and as she drove away her car was hit by gunfire.

She told police the suspect was still inside the home.

Crews arrived on the scene and surrounded the home making contact with the people inside.

After a man not involved in the incident came out, the suspect came out of the house on his own and was taken into custody.

Police learned there was a woman still inside the home who had warrants, according to Malson.

She refused to come out of the home for around three hours.

Dayton SWAT and a hostage negation team were on the way for the original call and stayed on the scene to help get the woman out of the home.

She was taken into custody without injury, Malson said.

Malson said crews are now clearing the home and looking for the gun involved in the original call.

The suspect of the original call and the woman with warrants were taken into custody. The first man who came out of the home is not facing criminal charges.

A nearby middle school, Edwin Joel Brown Middle School, entered the shelter in place around 1:50 p.m. and Malson said students were released from the backside of the school, away from the standoff.

“The school followed all district safety protocols, and at no point were students or staff in any danger,” a spokesperson for Dayton Public Schools said.

No injuries were reported.

We are working to learn the charges the two taken into custody face and will update this story as we get new information.
