News Center 7′s Amber Jenkins spoke with city planner Brian Forschner on Monday. He says the city wants to remodel the historical landmark.
“The main feature item is going to be, we’re going to have to repaint it at some point to keep it looking nice,” said Forschner.
Jenkins says Xenia Station used to be a bustling train station. Today, it is a park known for its trails, playground, and railroad history.
“There are two parks. There’s a spinny park with hatches and little seats you can spin, and then there’s the train park. This is the train park, it’s one of our favorites,” explained Forschner.
Whitney Fordyce and her daughter recently moved to Xenia. She loves how kids can play and learn about the City’s history.
“We like this park and if there’s more to be had, then that would be amazing,” she said.
Jenkins the city bought the Caboose for just $1 from the Greene County Historical Society. It did not have enough members to maintain the caboose.
“The historical society basically wasn’t able to maintain it anymore, so they were looking for new owners,” said Forschner.
As the city plans to give the caboose a new coat of paint, it is also looking to start a partnership.
“If we could find a partnership with a private group, we’d be open to that. Keep it activated and we want to at minimum keep it as a landmark and visual reminder,” said Forschner.
Jenkins told News Center 7′s James Brown that tours for the caboose are on hold until the city can find a partnership.
She says the city does not have enough staff to hold tours. But Forschner hopes they will find a partnership with an organization that will help them hold activities and tours of the caboose.
