‘It’s very painful;’ Dayton mayor reacts to closure of Mikesell’s, discusses future of company

DAYTON — A Dayton-based company that has been a snack staple since 1910 announced its closure Wednesday to the surprise of many Miami Valley residents.

Dayton Mayor Jeffrey Mims spoke on the closure and called it “painful.”

“It’s very painful. I grew up on Mikesell’s potato chips,” Mims said.

He found the news out at the same time that most Miami Valley residents did.

“I just heard it for the first time today... they’re still my favorite,” he said.

“Come to my house, look at my cabinet and that’s what you see,” he added.

Many are struggling to imagine a company that has been around for more than 100 years gone.

Mims said he hopes the company can find a way to remain in the area they have called home for so long.

“We’re hoping that they will be in a position to find some way to remain here, even if they restructure and do some other things that are beneficial for them,” he said.

This could be possible, in a statement sent to News Center 7 a spokesperson for the company said it will transition the brand to another snack food manufacturer.

The name of that manufacturer or when this could take place has not been released.
