1 firefighter hospitalized, 2 others hurt, after fire in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — One Springfield firefighter was taken to Miami Valley Hospital and two other firefighters were hurt while battling a fire in Springfield Sunday, according to a news release.

Crews were called to the 600 block of Rice Street around 2 p.m. on reports of a house fire, according to initial reports.

Two teams of firefighters were on the second floor of structure when internal conditions quickly changed, the release said.

Extreme heat caused crews to make a swift exit, during which time one firefighter fell down a flight of stairs and two others sustained minor injuries.

“They were ordered to evacuate,” Matthew Smith, Assistant Springfield Fire Chief told News Center 7. “During the evacuation, there was either a flash over or a collapse.”

The firefighter who fell was taken by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital.

“The report I have is he fell from down the stairs from the second floor to the first floor,” said Smith.

The extent of that his injuries are unknown at this time, according to the release.

The two other firefighters were treated for their injuries and released.

The fire is reportedly under control and no other injuries have been reported, the release said.

Four adults and one dog were safely out of the house when firefighters arrived, and the Red Cross is assisting in their care.
