Indiana man killed in fiery I-70 crash near Richmond

WAYNE COUNTY, Indiana — A man was killed in a single-vehicle crash late Monday night after an SUV plunged off an I-70 bridge and crashed onto a road below, according to Wayne County, Indiana Sheriff Randy Retter.

The crash was initially reported as a vehicle fire on Roundbarn Road near the I-70 overpass just before 11 p.m. Monday.

The driver of the SUV, identified as James Cotner, 44, of New Castle, Indiana was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation found Cotner’s SUV was traveling west on I-70 when it went off the roadway and into the median. The SUV went airborne across Roundbarn Road before crashing into the bridge embankment and caught fire.

Retter said the crash is under investigation and it was not immediately known why Cotner’s SUV went off the roadway before the crash.

Additional details were not available.
