Hundreds take to streets of Dayton to honor dream, legacy of MLK

The cold weather did not stop hundreds of people from honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Monday.

People from across the community gathered at the Charles Drew Health Center on MLK Way and marched to Sinclair Community College.

Those who participated in the annual event said there is a lot of work still to be done to keep King’s dream alive. They bundled up to protect again the cold and passed out hand warmers to make the march a little more comfortable.

A large Dayton Police escort blocked the roads to keep the participants safe. Many people said that despite the cold, their hearts were warm to celebrate one of America’s pioneering Civil Rights leaders and his dream that all people would one day be treated equally under the law and in society in America.

Today’s Dayton rally had people acknowledge that much progress has been made while pointing out that there is still a long way to go to achieve King’s dream. Some said they would concentrate on overcoming hate with love while others said they would concentrate on the work still to be done.

“We just need to work on loving each other. Continue to love each other, life each other up in prayer and be kind to one another. We must do that, it’s a must,” said Jennifer Ware, of Dayton.

The wind of snow did not dampen the spirit of those who participated in the march and they gathered briefly for a rally at Sinclair Community College.
