Huber Heights police: Beware Halloween decoration thieves

In the spooky month of October, thieves who steal spooky decorations for Halloween may be the scariest haunts of all in the community.

Huber Heights Police Sgt. David Garlow warns residents to stake inflatables to the ground and to use clear packing tape on the end of extension cords.

“A lot of times thieves want to take the easy way out. If it’s harder, they may not be willing to do it,” he said.

One Huber Heights resident said a neighbor’s decorations were stolen, but that he still spent more than 30 hours setting up an elaborate yard display.

"We try to get it to be kid-friendly, but a lot of the kids are still scared of it when we turn it on," Ervin Woodruff said. "We have cameras here so if anything happens hopefully that kind of scares them away."

Garlow said decoration theft doesn’t happen often, but one time is too many.

“Take photos and keep those photos so if something does come up missing, we know what we’re looking for.”
