Murder suspect found, arrested 8 months later in Indiana after routine traffic stop

INDIANA — A homicide suspect who was on the run was discovered and arrested in Indiana Friday, March 31.

The Indiana State Police Pendleton District stopped a vehicle for speeding after multiple drivers submitted complaints about the driver’s on-the-road behavior just before 4 p.m., a spokesperson for the department stated.

The responding state trooper found the driver’s red Ford Focus on state Route 35 near Mt. Pleasant, going above the posted speed limit. The exact speed and speed limit were not disclosed.

The state trooper proceeded to initiate a traffic stop where he identified Teddy Donnell Cozart, 20, of Andalusia, Alabama, as the driver.

During the traffic stop, the state trooper discovered that Cozart was wanted on an active warrant out of Alabama for a homicide. The homicide took place on October 2022, when a man was shot and killed while driving away from an apartment complex, the spokesperson said referencing the Andalusia Police Department.

Cozart was arrested and transported to the Delaware County Jail where he awaited extradition back to Alabama.

Indiana State Police detectives and the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office assisted Andalusia Police investigators with the ongoing investigation.
