Gem City Market celebrates 1-year anniversary

DAYTON — There is a big anniversary this weekend as it will mark one year since the Gem City Market officially opened to the public.

The community-owned market is located on Salem Avenue in Dayton.

Board members and employees told News Center 7 the store is investing in the community in the way the community needs. That includes changing pricing and getting new products.

Lela Klein, Gem City Market Board Member, said, “We’re making it easy for our customers to find those good prices because we know that everybody is really watching their budget right now.”

Adrian Harris, Butcher and Meat Manager at Gem City Market, said, “thing of this as a bigger cabinet for you, a bigger refrigerator for you. This is your store. This is your kitchen too.”

While the market said a lot has changed over the year, it is staying focused on building up the community and creating a family-like environment.

“The more you feel at home, they start bringing their family over here and their friends over, so it’s like having a family reunion every day with more customers and more people and everything,” Harris said.

The Gem City Market will be celebrating the anniversary on Saturday with a block party from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The party will have live music, food and activities for kids and games.

The market is also holding a 72-hour anniversary sale that starts Friday and runs through Sunday.
