Gas prices have increased by double digits in a month’s time, setting the national average to a new high in 2016.
The national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.28, which is 10 cents lower than the current average price in the Miami Valley, according to a release from AAA.
The price is about 16 cents higher than a month ago, but still 36 cents less than the price in May 2015, according to the release.
While wildfires in Canada and disruptions in other oil-producing countries are being blamed on the increase, gas prices typically peak before Memorial Day and normal trends indicate prices should drop later this summer, according to AAA Spokeswoman Cindy Antrican.
That will depend on whether the price of crude oil stays flat.
AAA anticipates more travelers on the road this Memorial Day weekend.
Nearly 34 million motorists, up 2.1 percent, will be on the roads because of the lowest gas prices for the holiday weekend since 2005, according to AAA.
Average retail gas prices in Dayton have risen 13.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.38 per gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 391 gas outlets in Dayton.
This compares with the national average that has increased 6.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.28 a gallon, according to GasBuddy.com.
According to GasBuddy.com, the average price for a gallon of gas in Dayton is $2.37, with prices falling. The cheapest gas, as of this morning, is $2.25 at the BP at S. Edwin C. Moses Blvd. and Interstate 75.
In Hamilton, the average price for a gallon of gas is $2.42, with prices stable. The cheapest gas is $2.36 at Valero at Millville Avenue and Ohio Avenue.
In Springfield, the average price for a gallon of gas is $2.37, with prices falling. The cheapest gas is $2.27 at multiple locations.
