Winter weather causes gas refineries to work harder, which could cause gas prices to increase.

“Extremely cold weather can lead to problems with refineries,” Patrick De Haan with Gas Buddy said. “Refineries are outdoors and exposed to the elements and some of the sub-zero temperatures we had over the last 48 hours can affect refineries negatively.”

Gas experts say January is the month where drivers are on the road the least.

“Because very few of us want to drive when it’s this cold outside, so not only this cold weather across the county is certainly a risk for refineries, but it also means lower gasoline on demand,” De Haan said.

Dayton drivers noted Wednesday how low the gas prices are.

“It’s pretty cheap,” Victor Bird said. “Gas is going to be what it is, you’ve got to have it.”

Experts say the increase in cost is expected in February, not only because of the weather, but because of pending tariffs from President Trump. The US imports around 4 million barrels of oil from Canada.

“If there’s a tariff of 25 percent on Canadian oil, that will cause the price of Canadian oil to go from $63 to $79 in February and you can only imagine if refineries see a jump in prices by $16, that’s going to impact you and I as well,” De Haan said.
