Former local attorney, judge loses battle against acute leukemia

DAYTON — A.J. Wagner, well known for his decades of compassionate service to the Greater Dayton community, passed away last night after a four month battle with acute leukemia.

An attorney by profession, Wagner served as Montgomery County Auditor and as a Common Pleas Court judge.

He also ran for Dayton Mayor in 2013.

He then served on the state Board of Education until 2016 when he and his wife, Joan, moved to State College, Pennsylvania to help their daughter and her husband with their newborn twins.

A.J.’s wife Joan was the former director of Marianist Strategies at the University of Dayton.

Together, the couple opened their hearts and their home to U.D. students involved in spiritual retreats.

In addition to Joan, A.J. is survived by his daughters, Aileen and Maureen, their husbands, and five grandchildren.

The family is planning a memorial service at U.D., which has yet to be scheduled.

A.J. Wagner was 70 years old.
