Former church music director sentenced to 3 years in prison for child sex crime

DAYTON — UPDATE @ 5:25 p.m. (Jan. 22, 2019):

A former Beavercreek church music director was sentenced today to three years in prison.

John R. Slate, 49, of Centerville, pleaded guilty Jan. 11 to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.

He previously was convicted of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and pandering obscenity involving a minor in September 2017, according to court records.

Slate also is labeled a Tier II sexual offender, meaning that once released, he will have to register his address every 180 days with his local sheriff’s office for 25 years.

Slate was also sentenced to three years in prison for violating his probation in the 2017 case. The sentencing will run concurrent to the 2018 case, meaning he will serve a total three years in prison.

Less than a year after being convicted of child sex crimes, a former Beavercreek church music director pleaded not guilty to a new charge.

John R. Slate, 49, of Centerville, pleaded not guilty to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor Tuesday, according to Montgomery County Common Pleas Court records.

Bond was set at $10,000 cash or surety.

Slate was previously convicted of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and pandering obscenity involving a minor in September 2017, according to court records.

The most recent charge stems from his May arrest for a parole violation.

During a scheduled meeting, Slate’s probation officer was examining his phone when Slate received a text from a teen girl, according to court documents.

Slated was previously the St. Andrew United Methodist Church music director.

A scheduling conference for Slate was set for Sept. 6.
