Fire damages abandoned Moraine Inn and Suites

Firefighters are investigating after fire severely damaged the abandoned Moraine Inn and Suites late Saturday night.

Crews from Moraine, West Carrollton, Kettering, Dayton, and the Miami Valley Fire District were dispatched around 11:30 p.m. Saturday to the hotel at 2455 Dryden Road on reports of smoke coming from the vacant building.

Moraine Fire Deputy Chief Jeff Eitel said when firefighters arrived on scene, crews found fire already coming from the roof, and took a defensive approach to fighting the blaze.

“It was quite unsafe to go inside initially, so we made sure to have the fire knocked down,” Eitel said. “We didn’t want to take a chance on hurting any firefighters for a vacant building.”

The cause and location of where the fire started is under investigation. A fire investigator from the Dayton Fire Department will investigate before firefighters knock down more walls to extinguish more hot spots.

Around the time the fire broke out, our newsroom received reports of a power outage centered in the Moraine area. A DP&L online outage map reported 820 customers were without power around 12:30 a.m Sunday, but DP&L represenatives said the outage was unrelated to the fire

Firefighters are expected to remain on scene for several more hours extinguishing hot spots, according to Eitel.

A damage estimate to the building was not immediately available. No injuries were reported.
