Victim rescued from Springfield porch fire was bedridden, fire official says

UPDATE @ 8:42 p.m.: The woman Springfield firefighters rescued from a house on Hillside Avenue likely suffered a panic attack because she was bedridden and trapped in the basement when he blaze started on the front porch, fire Division Battalion Chief Jeremy Linn said.

The woman was in the basement, Linn said. She was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center as a precaution.

There were two other people in the basement who were able to get out on their own.

Fire and smoke were contained to a sun porch-type structure that did not extend inside the home, he said.

Fire crews did find some smoking materials in the front yard and renovation work was being done, he said, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Linn estimated the damage to the structure and contents at less than $1,000.

UPDATE @ 6:35 p.m.:

A woman fire crews rescued from the Springfield house fire on Hillside Avenue has been taken to a hospital.

She was brought out on a stretcher and she was being given oxygen as the medical unit was prepped to take her to Springfield Regional Medical Center.

Flames caused heavy damage to the front of the home in the 2200 block of Hillside Avenue.

Hillside and Champion avenues are shut down until further notice.

INITIAL REPORT

Crews dispatched to a house fire in Springfield have located at least one victim in the basement.

The victim’s condition is not known at this point, but a rescue unit is on scene.

News Center 7 is hearing that victim may be confined to a bed and that smoke and flames did not reach the basement of the two-story wood frame home. The fire broke out on the first floor, we’re hearing.

Crews were sent to Hillside and Champion avenues ion the report of a house fire just after 6 p.m.
