MIAMI VALLEY — The entire Miami Valley is under a Heat Advisory until 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
With temperatures in the 90’s and heat index values approaching 100, a local city is doing what it can to protect workers, and high school athletes are finding ways to practice without being outside.

As reported on News Center 7 Daybreak, Stebbins High School Football Coach Greg Bonifay said that his athletes were inside on Monday during practice.

“You know we’ve got a protocol here that we go by, and once it gets to that certain temperature we you know, sometimes we go out with shoulder pads and helmets on; sometimes it’s got to be without helmet, even you know, with nothing on, and if worse comes to worst we’ll be inside still getting work done,” said Bonifay.
Premiere Health Athletic Trainer at Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School Mary Sutton said it is highly important that athletes stay hydrated.
She suggested that athletes add in some sort of electrolyte drink to help, whether it be Gatorade, Powerade, or some of the powder packets you can shake into bottled water.
The feeling of chronic thirst is oftentimes one of the first indicators that you’re dehydrated, Sutton said.
“If that person would continue to exercise in extreme heat and their body continues to get hotter, exertional heat stroke would be the worst-case scenario for an athlete in these hot temperatures,” said Sutton.
Bonifay hopes that their scheduled game at home on Friday will feel much cooler for the athletes due to the rain that is projected and the game being played at night.
The City of Piqua said that Rumpke will begin its waste collection early to protect workers from the extreme heat.
Residents are reminded to place all trash and recycling at the curb the evening before their scheduled collection day.
