County Line Road widening project to prepare part of Kettering for development

KETTERING — The project to widen County Line Road from three lanes to five lanes from Dorothy Lane to Vale Drive is underway.

The project is expected to continue in three phases, with the first phase currently underway continuing through October.

City officials said the development around the area including the $50 million expansion of Community Tissue Services and construction of Life Connection of Ohio’s $12 million headquarters has partially driven the need for the road expansion.

Both facilities are expected to bring about 250 jobs to the city.

“Over the next 20 years, this corridor is expected to see a further increase to the average daily traffic flow,” the city said in a statement.

The city also recently purchased 300 undeveloped acres within the Miami Valley Research Park, which is located in the area of Research Boulevard and County Line Road. The city hopes it will be able to develop about 160 acres of vacant ground ready to be built on.

The road construction will allow for County Line Road to be two through lanes in both directions with a center left turn lane.

The sidewalks on the west side of the road also will be replaced with 10-foot multi-use trails that will connect to existing paths to the north.

The cost of the project is around $4 million and is being covered by about 60 percent in federal funding, with the additional money being split 50/50 between Kettering and Beavercreek.

In 2015, city leaders said the stretch of road saw about 16,260 drivers pass through daily and they anticipate by 2035 that the number will grow to 21,000 daily.

Construction is expected to last through Fall 2022.
