AUGLAIZE COUNTY — Two people were killed in a crash involving a semitrailer and an SUV that shut down an intersection in St. Johns east of Wapakoneta Monday afternoon., according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported around 2:15 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 33 and state Route 65.

The driver of the SUV was at a stop sign when he failed to yield to an approaching semi traveling westbound on U.S. 33, state troopers said.
The semi hit the SUV in the intersection, pushed it off the roadway, striking several trees and in an fence line.
The two people in the SUV, identified as Warren Smith, 78 of Huntsville, and Patricia Smith were killed at the scene of the crash. The semi driver was not hurt.
“This is a rare accident in this area,” said Sgt. Rodney Kiefer, adding that there is a flashing light at the intersection.
Alcohol is not expected to have been a factor in the crash.
